[6 July 2011] – On 23 June 2011, Catherine Ashton, the European Commission’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, responded to concerns raised by Keith Taylor MEP regarding the detention of Palestinian children by Israel.

In the letter, Ashton stated that the ‘European Union is concerned by the sharp increase in the number of children who have been arrested in the occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly East Jerusalem, in 2010.’ Commissioner Ashton also expressed concern that over half of these children are being detained inside Israel in contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
