Ramallah, July 3, 2022—A 17-year-old Palestinian boy succumbed to gunshot wounds today after he was shot by an Israeli soldier with live ammunition yesterday in the northern occupied West Bank.

Kamel Abdullah Kamel Alawneh, 17, was shot with live ammunition by Israeli forces around 6:30 p.m. on July 2 in Jaba, a village located southwest of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, according to documentation collected by Defense for Children International - Palestine. Kamel was shot while standing about 20 meters (65 feet) away from Israeli soldiers deployed near a village entrance. He was shot multiple times, sustaining gunshot wounds to his elbow and, then, his abdomen as he fled. He was transported to a nearby medical center and then to Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin where he was pronounced dead around 2 p.m. on July 3.

“Israeli soldiers know no bounds and kill Palestinian children with impunity,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director at DCIP. “Palestinian children will continue to be targeted. They will continue to be unlawfully killed without actual justice and accountability.”

Israeli forces in five military vehicles deployed at the northern entrance to Jaba village around 6:30 p.m. on July 2 to erect a checkpoint and confrontations between Israeli soldiers and village residents ensued. Kamel was standing 20 meters (65 feet) away from Israeli forces when live ammunition struck him in the right elbow. He fled and was struck in the abdomen with another live round that exited his right side. Kamel walked injured for about 20 meters and then fell to the ground, according to information collected by DCIP.

Kamel was transported in a private car to a medical center nearby and then transferred by ambulance to Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin where he underwent surgery and was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit. He was pronounced dead around 2 p.m. today.

Under international law, intentional lethal force is only justified in circumstances where a direct threat to life or serious injury is present. However, investigations and evidence collected by DCIP regularly suggest that Israeli forces use lethal force against Palestinian children in circumstances that may amount to extrajudicial or wilful killings.

Kamel is the 16th Palestinian child shot and killed by Israeli forces in 2022, according to documentation collected by DCIP.
